Adobe Indesign – Continuing a Numbered List in a new Section or following a Header.

Since these options are not available readily in the Bullets and Numbering section I scratched my head about this for a moment. After all I wanted my numbered list which is for a list of prose that must be numbered to continue after I placed a title for my new section. The answer was easier than I thought. So to save you the trouble, here is how to make it happen.

Create a Paragraph style and name it “Numbering 1” double click this new style to go into the Paragraph style options ensure that in the “Bullets and Numbering” section, the mode is set to “Start At”.

For your section of text that you want to have continuing numbers in create another Paragraph style and name it “Numbering 2” double click this new style to go into the Paragraph style options ensure that in the “Bullets and Numbering” section, the mode is set to “Continue from Previous…”.

That should do it!

Adobe Flash Compiler Error -XML Duh Moment

So, like many things in Flash that make me want to bang my head against the wall. Here is another lovely for you.

Being a Noob I added _ underscores to my file name not thinking like a pro that this would somehow conflict with the XML file upon my attempt to test and/or publish my App.

To save you (and myself when I inevitably do this again) from the headache – because like me you might want to bang your head against the wall – here is some handy info I found on the web. It was reblogged by a chap in a similar situation as myself and so I will now reblog his reblog of a blog.

Flex compiler – application descriptor: invalid application identifier

Whenever your Flex compiler prompts
application descriptor: invalid application identifier“,
you might check your application description XML file. Your application ID might contain underscores (in my case) or other invalid characters. Since I found a hint to the solution only at, I think it’s a good idea to reblog it.

Quote from Adobe livedocs:

id – An identifier string unique to the application, known as the application ID. The attribute value is restricted to the following characters:

  • 0-9
  • a-z
  • A-Z
  • . (dot)
  • – (hyphen)

The value must contain between 1 to 212 characters. This element is required.

The id string typically uses a dot-separated hierarchy, in alignment with a reversed DNS domain address, a Java package or class name, or an OS X Universal Type Identifier. The DNS-like form is not enforced, and AIR does not create any association between the name and actual DNS domains.

Thank you sir for saving me from my own ignorance. May you help many other poor souls as well.

3D Design – Study – Game Costumes

Vampires The Masquerade: Bloodlines.

Okay so I know I’ve talked about this game before in one of these classes but I thought this would be a perfect example. The “races” in the game are called Clans and they are grouped together by their attributes. This game is based off of a Pen and Paper RPG and you can pick what group you want to be a part of based on their skills, personality, abilities and looks. Each group offers a very different gaming experience and to this day I still think this is my favorite game as far as having so many options available to play differently in a game based on your personal choices, your Clan, and your “Humanity.” The game is different almost every time you play it. It’s cool.

Back to the costumes. The Ventrue are my favorite and they dress real classy. They are basically to the Vampire world what politicians are to us common folk. Why are they my favorite if I am not a big fan of politicians? Because if you play as one, you can make people do what you want. Hah!

The costumes on these characters can be changed out through the game too but they are always specific to your clan. You cannot have a “Tremure” wearing “Nosferatu” clothing. It wont happen.

On that note, here are some videos that go through the Clans and clothing for the game.

If you haven’t tried this game, yes its dated, and the support for it ended ages ago when the company who made it tanked but you can find on the internet that awesome techie software people have added patches to make it run smoothly.

Learning Flash – Quick Tip – Object Drawing Tool

Use the Object Drawing tool in order to be able to select an entire object after creation and to keep yourself from erasing bits and pieces of your art. An annoying problem if you are used to working in Illustrator where everything is very simple.

The Object Drawing Tool is available when you create a shape like rectangle, circle, etc.. as well as when you use the pen tool, the Pencil tool and the Paint Brush.

It is located in the lower left corner when it is available and you can use the shortcut (j) to access it quickly.

Adobe Illustrator Stroke Width Wont Change – How to Fix – A Few Tips

I ran into this problem today.

First of all, I will share with you the most common issue that should clear up your stroke issues.

Then we will look at another possible cause.

Go to Edit > Preferences > General >

Click the box next to: Scale Strokes & Effects

Did that clear it up?

Usually it will, but if you are like me and have always known that and it still didn’t work, try this:

Go to Window > Transform >

Unclick the box next to: Align to Pixel Grid

That should work.

If it doesn’t try expanding your object by going to:

Object > Expand

Object > Expand Appearance

You wont be able to edit the paths any more but you should be able to scale it.

If that doesn’t fix it comment below and we can see if we can find a way to help you out.

MS Word Quick Tip #2 How to clean up documents with paragraph marks after every line.

Okay so this one aggravated me for awhile and I found the internet useless for it.

Yes, yes everyone tells you how to remove every  paragraph mark in your document, but what if you don’t want to remove them from the places the paragraph marks should actually be?

I put my brain into action and came up with this easy work around.

First Go to your find and replace command and type in the special characters for paragraphs in the FIND box.

They look like this: ^p

Then do it again so it looks like this: ^p^p

Next go to the REPLACE WITH box and type any random symbol that you know is NOT in your document. I used the @ symbol for this particular document but if you have @ symbols in your document use something else.

So it looks like this:

FIND: ^p^p

Click the REPLACE ALL button.

Next go back to the find and replace options and type this in:

FIND: ^p

REPLACE WITH: *Here you will simply press the space bar once to create a space*

Click the REPLACE ALL button.

Final step:

Go back to the find and replace options and type this in:

Click the REPLACE ALL button.

Looks nice doesn’t it?
